We believe that God is concerned with the whole of life and from the beginning of her history the Church has been involved in projects to uplift those in need and contribute to the society in which she finds herself. While our resources are limited, we hope to soon get the following projects underway.
We are currently working with a group of local women who are seeking to establish a food garden on the land behind the Church. Although there are prosperous people in the area, there is also great poverty and there are people who have to go to bed hungry. Moreover, food prices have sky-rocketed and many people cannot afford proper nutrition. In this context, we believe that it is important to empower people by encouraging them to grow their own food. If we can secure sufficient funding, we also hope to offer training in organic gardening in collaboration with another local organisation.
Children’s Literacy Activities
Although South African children all have access to primary and secondary education, the quality of teaching varies drastically, and many children fall behind on basic literacy skills. It is widely acknowledged that children who lose out on early literacy development remain at a disadvantage throughout their education. We are currently planning a project to encourage a culture of reading among the children in the area. If we can raise the funds, we hope to be able to employ a teacher for a few afternoons a week to work with children of different ages.
